For 14 years, members of Milwaukee’s African-American and Jewish communities have gathered together at a Passover Seder to celebrate and acknowledge our peoples’ triumphs over adversity through the centuries.  We have used an annual of the Passover Seder as a way to explore our peoples’ stories of perseverance in the face of historical tragedy and to deepen our commitment as allies to each other.

Our Seder is a joyous celebration feast full of music and song, where we retell the biblical story of the exodus from slavery.  We, Jews and Africans in America, have found similar histories, experiences, and meaning reflected in this retelling, which we ask you to explore with us.

This year, we will examine the stories of Israeli author and Nobel Laureate S.Y. Agnon (1888-1970). His stories are at once satirical and poignant, serious and humorous, bridging the gap between the lost world of Jewish Europe and that of modern Israel. Our text will be S.Y.
